If your home doesn't feel as cool as it should, or doesn't feel like it's reaching the temperature that you have your thermostat set to, it may not actually be working properly. There are ways to check and things you can do  to help make the repair if needed. To help you diagnose and repair your air conditioner, read on for a few helpful tips.

Check The Temperature Against Your Thermostat

If your air conditioner isn't working, it may not necessarily be the air conditioning unit at all, it could just be the thermostat. Check the temperature in your home by using a thermometer, if there is a major difference in the temperature according to either the thermostat or the thermometer, you should change the thermostat to see if this helps make your repair. If your thermostat is broken, it may be reading the temperature you set your thermostat to, but isn't actually sending the right signal to your air conditioner. Swap out the thermostat with a new one and check it to see if it helps with the temperature in your home. If you have an older thermostat, such as an old dial thermostat, it may not be very accurate.

Check The Air Filter

If you have a clogged air filter, you aren't going to be able to get enough cool air to your home. Remove the air filter and replace it with a new one of the right size. The air filter in your system should be replaced every other month. This goes for whenever you are using your furnace or your air conditioner. Your HVAC system requires that you change this air filter, so don't let this be a neglected task, or it could be a costly repair.

Check The Size Of Your Air Conditioner

If your air conditioner is too small for your home, you may have to replace it with a new one that is the correct size. If your air conditioner is not the right size for your home, it may run too much in order to catch up with the temperature setting. This can occur if you have a unit that is too big or too small. Talk to a professional about the size of your unit in relation to the square footage of your home. If it needs to be replaced, have it replaced.
