Your home's furnace is most likely one of those things that you rarely think about. As long as it heats up your home, that's all that really matters, isn't it?

Weird Sounds and Smells

If your furnace is operating efficiently, the only thing you should ever hear coming from it is a slight clicking sound as the unit turns on and off. If you hear a clanking sound like a piece of metal that is rattling around inside of it or a clicking sound that is happening constantly, then that needs to be addressed. Moreover, the smell of mildew emanating from your vents is a sign that mold has developed, and it needs to be addressed before your family's health is compromised.

System Not Turning On

If you turn on your furnace this year only to find out that it isn't working, then that's obviously a big issue. An emergency HVAC technician can be at your home within a few hours to take a look at it, but before that happens, check the thermostat and the breaker box to make sure that there's energy going to your system. If it's still not working, then you should have it looked at, since a lack of heat inside your home can cause the other systems in your house to fail, not to mention pose potential health problems to members of your family.

Unit Not Heating Evenly

One of the other major issues that can come about with a furnace is a unit that isn't heating your space evenly. If one room is colder than the other, then you most likely have either an underpowered furnace or a unit that is starting to fail. Contact a technician to have it looked at and perform any heating repairs that are necessary to prolong the life of the unit, but don't be surprised if they recommend a full replacement instead.
