If you want to keep your cooling costs in check this summer, and you don't want to face super high energy bills, here are four tricks that can help you keep your cooling costs down and in check so that you don't break your pocket book.

#1 Change Out Your Air Filter

Changing out the air filter on your HVAC system is one way to keep your cooling costs in control this summer. Your HVAC system for your home has a filter. This filter plays a very important role in your HVAC system. Not only does it help keep dust and pollenensts out of your house, it also helps your air conditioning system to run as effectively as possible. When it is dirty and clogged, it cannot do either of these jobs. Make sure that you change out your air filter at the start of summer, and check it once a month when you are using it heavily. When it starts to build-up dirt and dust, clean it or replace it.

#2 Cover Up Your Windows

In the summertime, a lot of the heat that is generated in your home actually comes in through the windows. All that beautiful sunlight can really raise the temperature inside your home, especially when your home is being directly hit with sunlight. To keep your home cool, you should close the blinds and curtains when your house is being directly hit with sunlight. If that happens when you are at work, just keep everything closed up until you get home for the day. You'll get a little less natural light inside of your house, but your house should also be a little bit cooler.

#3 Turn On That Fan

You don't have to just rely on your HVAC system to keep your house cool. If you have any ceiling fans in your house, turn them on. If you have portable fans, use them as well. Keep the cool air from your HVAC system flowing throughout your house, even when your AC is not actively pumping out hot air, will help you feel cool. Additionally, sometimes all you really need to feel cool is that cool breeze over your skin, which the ceiling and free-standing fans in your home can help provide you with.

#4 Decrease The Humidity

Oftentimes, the heat can be so unbearable not because it is so hot, but because it is so humid. If you have a dehumidifier, plug it in and use it this summer. If you don't have one, see if one can be installed to work together with your HVAC system. Sometimes, decreasing the humidity in the house is all you need to do to really cool off.
